German Village, Columbus Ohio

German village is not only known for its rich society and long history but also its beautiful parks, memorials and diners. From Livingstone Avenue to Nursery Lane lies the history of Columbus Ohio. In German Village there are two main things to take note of, the history and events.

It all started with a man named John McGowan. He bought a piece of land after serving in the revolutionary war and built the first house on the new land given by the United States government. In 1830 more and more German immigrants flowed to Columbus to get away from famine and discrimination.  By 1865 more than one-third of Columbus’s population was German. Eventually through time wonderful and extravagant buildings would be built like the Catholic Church of St Mary and City Park. During the time of World War I there was a lot of German resentment, but with the birth of Eddie Rickenbacker that would all change. Much like leading the Americans to a healthy win he also helped Columbus overcome its diversity issues. During the great depression the South End had a fall out of grace but with a very small act of buying a house Frank Fetch would be yet a beacon of light for German Village to follow. In 1975 German Village was place on the National Register of Historic Places, a great step from being a broken down piece of land. Also the last Sunday of June is a premier event every year that lets you view many houses and beautiful gardens.  Along with that event is the German Village Oktoberfest hosted every year the weekend after Labor Day. Now stands history in the making, with everyone trying to keep the district in order they are keeping their history alive and passing it on.

German Village doesn’t just host its traditional events it also has many other things you can do. There is everything from plays to music concerts to a cookout. In the next three months there are four concerts, two plays, and two tours of the village itself. Holding such plays as Shake spears readings and The Tempest. In this district there is almost too much to see. They also have Monster Bash something I have never heard of before but it sounds like a great event. Basically adults get to dress up and go out and trick-or-treat with all of your friends. That sounds like an amazing time to have.

German Village is a great place to live. It’s so rich in history that you really learn lessons by living in this well cultured neighborhood. Living here you would be able to shop, walk and drop as you lived in peace and a very different city.  This is perhaps one of the best places to live in Ohio and maybe even the United States. I wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to check this place out and even maybe live there.
